SACRAMENT FORMATION
Sacrament Formation in the Diocese of Portland is a two-year process implemented by Bishop Deeley in 2015. As a Diocese that observes "restored order" of the Sacraments (meaning Confirmation is received before First Eucharist), the children recieve the Sacraments of Reconciliation (Confession) in the fall of Year Two, followed by Confirmation and First Eucharist on the same day in the spring of Year Two. Year One provides the necessary foundation for full initiation into the Catholic Church. Parent participation is expected during the two-year formation period.

Children who are six or seven years of age are invited to register for the first year of Sacrament Formation. The two-year formation process provides children with the necessary time to learn about and develop a relationship with God, to learn their prayers, to understand and desire the sacraments, and to be involved in the Church, particularly through regular participation at Sunday Mass.
Year One includes children in first or second grade. During this first year of sacrament preparation, your child will be introduced to the four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church: the Creed, the Sacraments, the Commandments, and Prayer (CCC 14-17).
Year Two includes children in second or third grade who will prepare for and celebrate the sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Year Two begins with a deeper understanding of the Mass.
